The Church of England (CofE) plays a vital role in the life of the nation. Reports suggest annual attendance across the UK may be down, but that hasn’t stopped existing members exploring fresh expressions of Christianity in a sincere attempt to enrich their faith and serve their community well.
St Thomas, a CofE church in Ipswich, Suffolk, had started their fresh expression to appeal to more contemplative and thoughtful Christians, emphasising a love for God and their local community.
The group asked me to design a logo to help present themselves to congregants and the public. As they had never gone through an identity project before, working remotely, I helped them summarise the group’s main values and goals. I then used their distinctives to create a flexible identity that was both traditional and contemporary.
The solution? Vibrant and accessible, the stained glass window treatment reflected the community’s roots in a way the public can connect with. What’s more, the hand-drawn ligature included a heart-shape pointing conveniently in the direction of town they wanted to serve…
